OpenBreath

OpenBreath is a free Android app for respiratory training. It connects over Bluetooth to a BreaThru Max breathing trainer, records the volume of each inhale and exhale, and keeps that history on your phone so you can see whether your breathing is improving.

What this app is for

Freedivers and breathing practitioners train specific exercises — a full exhale from packed lungs, an inhale from empty, an exhale from tidal volume — and need to know whether a given exercise is getting better over time. The training device measures one breath and shows a number, but it keeps no history and cannot tell one exercise from another.

OpenBreath exists to solve that. It records every measurement the device reports, lets you label which exercise it belongs to, and then shows your best, your average and your trend per exercise, so a packed-lung exhale is never averaged together with one from tidal volume.

What it does

Why OpenBreath asks for Google access

Signing in with Google is optional, and the app is fully usable without it. Its only purpose is backup: training history builds up over months, and losing a phone would otherwise lose all of it.

When you do sign in, the app requests a single Drive permission, drive.appdata, which gives it access to a hidden folder belonging to this app alone. It writes one file there — your measurements — and it cannot see or touch anything else in your Drive. Details are in the privacy policy.

Requirements

Note: the device only registers a breath of roughly 1000 ml or more. Smaller breaths show on the device's own screen but are never reported over Bluetooth — a characteristic of the hardware, not of this app.

OpenBreath is an independent, ground-up rebuild of the original BreaThru app for modern Android versions. It talks to the same hardware but shares no code with it, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by the manufacturer of the device.
